Mary E. Irvine papers, 1858-1985.

This collection consists of personal and family papers of Mary Ellen Hunter Irvine, and emphasizes the life and artwork of her sister-in-law, Sadie Irvine, and the group associated with Newcomb pottery. Included also are Hunter family papers. The collection contains handwritten and typed correspondence, research notes including an alphabetical card file of Newcomb craftsmen, genealogical and biographical information, family photographs, photographic negatives, forms, galley proofs of Louisiana's art nouveau, a drawing, certificates, newspaper clippings and other printed items.

Mary Ellen Hunter Irvine (b. 1901) married Dr. Richard Wynn Irvine, the brother of noted designer Sadie Irvine (1887-1970). With Suzanne Ormond, Mary E. Irvine authored the book, Louisiana's art nouveau : the crafts of the Newcomb style. This collection includes material about others involved in the Newcomb group, such as Ellsworth Woodward and others, as well as results of genealogical research regarding the Hunter side of the family. Sadie Irvine, born in New Orleans in 1887, became a student at Newcomb College at age fifteen, received her diploma in art in 1906, and served as an instructor in pottery and other arts, until her retirement in 1952. She was a student and colleague of Ellsworth Woodward. She produced and taught pottery design, drawing in watercolor and pastel, and print-making. Sadie Irvine died in 1970. Ellsworth Woodward was born July 14, 1861, in Seeconk, Mass., and was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was appointed professor of art at Tulane University in 1885. When the Newcomb College was organized, he became director of the Art School, and held this position until his retirement in 1931. He was one of the founders of the New Orleans Art Association, and was active in the Southern States Art League and the Louisiana Art Teachers' Association. An artist himself, his etchings...
